Goodreads Synopsis
Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land, all while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. But she can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.
The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her—or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.
Like Shadow and Bone I wasn’t blown away by this book. I found myself putting off reading it at times because I just wasn’t interested and while the plot wasn’t bad it also failed to pull me in.
Alina I like as a character however I still feel like there is nothing that stands out about her and I don’t feel she is very mermerable as a character. Mal I just couldn’t care less about, he could disappear off the face of the planet and I wouldn’t notice. i also don’t care about the romance between them, I just don’t believe the chemistry between then and for some reason and the normal romance drama you get in YA books is just annoying me even more than usual.
The Darkling continues to be a disappointment to me, I had such high hopes for him and from the way people talked about him I thought he was going end up a new favourite character however like Mal I don’t really care for him.
Nikolai, on the other hand is the person who made this book for me. I loved him from the minute we were introduced and I lived for every time he was on the page. To be honest if it wasn’t for his character I feel I might have given up on this book and I just hope we get lots more of him in Ruin and Rising.
Overall, I gave this 2.5 stars.
