Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

This book follows the story of a man (who is never named) when he visits his childhood home where he spends time remembering his childhood. That’s all I can really say about the plot. This book was strange, slightly terrifying and magical. I feel Neil Gaiman did a really good job writing from the point of view of a child. However, while I enjoyed this it didn’t blow me away so I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

Spectacle by Megan Rose Gedris

This is a graphic novel that follows the story of Anna and Kat who are twins that work at a circus, Kat is a knife thrower and Anna a psychic. However, Anna has no real psychic ability until one night when her sister Kat is killed and Anna is able to see her ghost, they then team up together to fin the culprit. Overall, this was a really fun and quick read. I enjoyed the characters of Anna and Kat and how they are so different from each other even though they are twins and I also liked finding out the backstories to the other circus members. I loved the artwork in this as it really adds to the circus feel of the book. While I enjoyed this book I wasn’t swept away by it and I felt that the ending was very abrupt. I gave it 3 out of five stars.

The Bear and the Nightingale by Kathrine Arden

This is a book I’m kind of on the fence about as I enjoyed it but didn’t love it. I enjoyed learning about Russian fairy tales and I enjoyed the writing style within the book and the magical and whimsical atmosphere. However, I felt the book was quite slow paced and I wasn’t really able to connect with any of the characters. Therefore I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

The Hatch by Joe Fletcher

I’m a massive fan of Edgar Allen Poe so when this poetry collection was compared to his I knew i just had to pick it up however, I didn’t enjoy this poetry collection as much as I was hoping to. I enjoyed some of the poems such as Kindergarten, The Wake, The Hatch and Palmdale Area but most of them I didn’t really understand. I gave this 1.5 stars.

Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them?
