Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

This book was everything I was hoping for and more, I read it in 5 hours as I just could not put it down. However because of that I didn’t take any notes so this is going to be a fun review to write (not).

I’ve always loved reading about faeries ever since I was a kid reading the Rainbow magic series and as I’ve grown older I’ve become more and more interested in reading books that show the darker and crueller side to faeries and this book did not disappoint.

This story follows Jude who was taken into Faerie when she was seven years old along with her sisters by the man who killed her parents. She is raised side by side with the faeries but is reminded on a constant basis of the fact that as a mortal she is beneath them and always will be. However, Jude is determined to find her place among them and is consequently drawn into the faerie court politics and into the middle of a civil war.

Jude is one badass character, she’s strong and determined and despite the torment she endures at the hands of some of the fey she refuses to let her fear consume her and instead uses it to make her stronger. She is also a morally grey character which makes me love her even more.                                                                                                                       Jude has a twin sister, Taryn, who is forced to stand back and watch Jade be tormented and unlike Jude wants to keep her head down and marry one of the fey. Her older sister Vivi is fey but wants nothing more than to leave Faerie and live in the mortal world. She is also a cannon bisexual (which I love, give me all the cannon bisexual characters) in a relationship with a girl.                                                                                                                  Cardan is the youngest faerie prince and is the ring leader of a group of faeries who delight in tormenting Jude. He is cruel but also charming and I loved him. I am also all for the hate to love romance brewing in this book.

If your looking for a dark faerie book, filled with court politics, cruelty, badass morally grey characters and amazing writing then this is the book for you.

Trigger Warning for abuse.

Overall, I devoured this book and don’t know how I’m going to survive the wait till the next one comes out. It is my favourite faerie book ever and I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Have you read this book? What did you think about it?
